If the price of connected light bulbs should drop from now until 2020, these devices remain pretty expensive. White lamps can be bought for about $10, but colored lights sell easily at $40, up to $60. With a relatively low price – $30 – for a 60W-equivalent LED, smart light bulb Qube is an exception.
Qube was born of three years of product development and a $625,000 fundraising via the crowfunding platform Indiegogo. Initially planned for distribution during the second quarter of 2016, the first smart light bulbs were delivered in January 2017. But if the early days of production were difficult, the next sales should lead to a second wave of deliveries in February 2017.
This delay will be easily forgiven for a simple reason: with a price tag of $29, Qube is at present one of the cheapest multi-color smart light bulbs of the market. By ordering the device directly on the manufacturer’s website, you will be able to save $5, which will drop its price at $24. It is not the first brand to sell a color-changing smart light bulb at such a low price, and it may not be the cheapest. But it is the most affordable for such a luminosity level: 800 lumens, which is equivalent to a 60W incandescent bulb. One bulb will be enough to brighten a bedroom, unlike some other models which provide a lower level of brightness (400 lumens).
Connected and smart
In addition to being sold at a reasonable price, Qube also has some interesting features. Manageable from a smartphone or a smart watch, the light bulb is able to locate you by detecting the signals emitted by your devices. The lamp can then automatically turn on or off as the user enters or leaves the room.
More classical options are also featured: the possibility to change the display color, call notifications, alarm clock, or even the possibility to synchronize the bulb with the sound produced by your smartphone. The dedicated application is compatible with IFTTT recipes, expanding possibilities when the bulb is paired up with other connected devices. As for the Internet connectivity, it can be made via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi and does not require any additional hub.
